I believe

“we all need, and deserve to be in well designed spaces that are derived from thoughtful planning and careful execution. Places where you can be yourself, be at ease, and feel a sense of bliss. ”

about susan yen

Theta Healing therapist + interior architectural designer, leed a.p.

Susan is a passionate designer who takes a therapeutic approach to design, and enjoys working with people on transforming ideas into reality. Together with the clients there’s always a greater synergy in co-creating unique spaces that reflect clients’ personalities and outlook on life. Born and raised in Taipei Taiwan, studied and worked in CA USA, she’s honed in and developed a well balanced design approach that pairs up Western Design sensibility, with Eastern philosophy on the importance of “practicality over looks”. It is her belief that design solutions only become the right solutions if they can translate abstract ideas, and bring them to life in the material world without compromising on either form or function. And of course, that also means the right design approach should transform places into energetically well balanced and harmonious spaces.

Now based in the UK, Susan has accumulated a diverse international background in Interior Architecture, spanning projects across Asia, USA, and UK. With experiences on projects covering Mixed-used Sky Scrappers, Hospitality, Education, Healthcare, Residential and Commercial designs, Susan’s experience covers all design and development stages.

She graduated with a post B.A professional certificate in Interior Architecture from UCLA Extensions’ ARC_ID program, where she had the honor of interning at the top hospitality design firm HBA and SOM, and has since worked in major international firms including SOM and HMC Architects prior to starting s.Yen Design as a sole practitioner. The aim of s.Yen design is to bring her knowledge and the concept of sustainable design practices to the greater public, and be available to those in need of help who may have deemed anything “designed” to be far too out of reach.

Susan’s Design Ethos comes from embracing cultural variants and project constraints, to inspire creative visions and design solutions. Throughout the past 10+ years of her solo career, her spirit in balancing both clients’ wishes and project perimeters, has made her a quick problem solver, and an all rounded designer that ensures the project scope is met with happy clients. And more often than not, Susan has simply proven to be just all ears — she brings something extra to the designer / client relationship; counselling services that help resolve some underlying fundamental issues which may be worked out as the physical space is also being transformed.

Her proudest work thus far, is a key stage 1 school nursery for her local community, designed and built with the children in mind. She was rewarded most handsomely with the joy, laughter, and the excitement seen on children’s faces as they first entered into the classroom! And thus, is why she will always deem herself to be a designer for the everyday people.
