This home office project is very dear to me, because it's actually mine. I decided during my pregnancy that the office really needed to be more than an office. With the old office completely disorganised and full of old IKEA furniture from my college days, I finally realised that it had to be transformed - it needed to reflect my lifestyle and my new role as an expecting mom. The main objective was to clear up the center of the office to make room for play / lounge. Secondly it needed to still fulfill its function as my home office / library to house our existing books + future children's books + a desk just deep enough to hold a large desktop computer and office supplies. Last but not least this office needed to double as a guest room, on a quite frequent basis. To make it all work, a modular shelving system was devised which consisted of a base modular (two different length), shelving modular (two slight variations in style), and an uniquely angled desk plus many "drawers". The combination of these elements offered a highly flexible shelving / storage system that can be easily adapted into any space, anywhere. The simple style of these shelves dressed in American Walnut Wood Veneer also meant that it could fit into any design scheme, effortlessly. The end result is a nice and efficient system sitting alongside the perimeter of the walls, housing not only books but toys, office supplies, material samples, and other misc. items while keeping a clean and uniformed look. The lower base that turned the corner of the room offered a nice bench seating for day to day usage. In the case of having a guest over, the floor space is large enough to contain a double size mattress without the need to rearrange any furniture or move the office chair away. Since the completion of this project in 2008, the office and this set of shelves have been a part of years of playing / reading / working / hosting visits. As we found ourselves moving cross continent from U.S to U.K, this shelving system continues to adapt and serve well in any new flats we found ourselves in. My husband finally admits that this may just be the best furniture system, ever!
